Dilemma 5

Q Watch: Ethical dilemma number five: Sports Money and Taxes Read: https://elkodaily.com/opinion/columnists/is-tax-avoidance-ethical-asking-on-behalf-of-a-few-billionaire-friends/article_e4085f81-83c3-577d-929f-9c0eedf3239c.html (Links to an external site.) Discuss: Should wealthy athletes pay a lot more proportionally in taxes? All written material will be judged not only on content but style. Typos, grammatical and spelling errors, and dishonesty (plagiarism) will all count against the final grade assigned. To successfully participate in a discussion forum, students will need to post a minimum of three relevant postings to the discussion, over at least three different days of the week. To be considered relevant, the posting must move the discussion forward with new information, opinion or direction. Posting only “I agree” or “I disagree” is not considered relevant, and will not be considered a relevant post. It is of course permissible to agree or disagree with a fellow classmate – as long as defensible reasons for the new position are provided. No personal attacks or disruptive behavior will be tolerated in the discussion. I believe the discussion boards are very important - hence I count them as a large part of your final grade. You will find I am generous with extra credit for bar-raising participation. Participate at least three different times a week, raise the bar each time, reference the sources for your opinions and you will do well. Keep the conversation flowing!

Taxes pay for corrections, infrastructure, higher education, environmental regulation, health care, defense, income security, veterans benefits, immigration, and many other government programs. People justify the opinion that rich people should pay more in taxes because they can afford to and because it can help society. If you are forced to give a portion of your labor to someone else to support another’s purpose, you may grow to feel unmotivated to labor as hard. Taxation is forced labor (Lecture:6, Who Owns Me, 2017). Gifting and charitable donations are always great to hear about. I like seeing athletes and other top earnings deciding where they would like to put their hard-earned money to work by aiming to improve society.
